Equipment maintenance and facilities

Maintenance is a race against a part nobody stocks. The point of this service is to shorten it.

In short

Equipment outlives its spare parts. When a component fails and the supplier is gone, the lead time is months, or the minimum order is five hundred, the original can be measured, modelled and printed. The model is then kept, so the second time the same part fails it is a phone call rather than a project.

The problem this sector actually has

Maintenance teams do not have a parts problem. They have a time problem that shows up as a parts problem.

The machine is fine. One plastic component has failed. The manufacturer has discontinued it, been bought, or quoted a lead time that outlasts the reason the machine was bought. Meanwhile the cost of the outage accumulates every hour, and it is invariably much larger than the part.

The options are usually: wait, improvise something that fails again in a fortnight, or replace a working machine over one component. Remaking the part is the option that keeps the asset and ends the outage.

The part of this that is worth planning

The most valuable thing a maintenance team can do here is not wait for the second failure.

The slow half of the job is measuring and modelling, and it only ever has to happen once. Once a model exists, every subsequent part is a print. So a component that has already failed once — and that you know will fail again — is worth having modelled now, while the machine is running and nobody is under pressure.

That turns the next failure from a shutdown into a phone call, and it is the cheapest insurance available. Several customers keep a printed spare on the shelf for exactly this reason. Bringing in the awkward parts from two or three machines at once, while nothing is broken, is a far better use of a maintenance budget than an emergency.

What gets remade

  • Covers, panels, guards and dust shrouds that broke and were never replaced.
  • Knobs, handles, levers, catches and latches on plant nobody supports any more.
  • Guides, chutes, deflectors and wear strips.
  • Brackets, mounts, spacers and standoffs.
  • Gears, bushes, rollers and light drive components under moderate load.
  • Sensor and switch mounts, and the small housings that hold them.
  • Gaskets, bump stops, pads and seals in flexible TPU.

What speeds a job up

Photograph any moulded part number, casting mark or logo before you send anything. It occasionally identifies the original component or an equivalent still on sale, which is cheaper and faster than anything that can be printed.

Send all the pieces, including fragments. A clean break often makes internal geometry easier to measure rather than harder.

Say what the part does — what it holds, what it slides against, what it is exposed to, how hot it gets. That decides the material and the print orientation, and it is the most useful sentence in the enquiry.

The honest limits

These matter more here than anywhere else on the site, because the thing that fails is a machine.

Heat. PLA, PETG and flexible TPU do not belong near sustained heat — not against a motor running hot, not near an element, an oven or an exhaust. This is the single most common reason a printed part fails in service, and it is entirely predictable beforehand.

Safety and heavy structure. Everyday and moderate loads are ordinary work. Anything whose failure is dangerous is not: structural members under heavy sustained load, guards forming part of a risk assessment, pressure components, lifting equipment, and anything carrying a compliance or insurance obligation. That line is firm and you will be told when a job crosses it.

Liquids and chemicals. Printed parts are not watertight by default and solvents, fuels and some cleaning agents attack these materials. Worth raising before anything is printed.

Food and potable water. Not offered. Layer lines harbour bacteria and nothing here is made to a food-safe standard.

Maintenance and facilities teams, plant engineers, and small manufacturers keeping equipment running past the point the manufacturer cares about it. Repeat work is normal and welcome — once a machine's awkward parts have been measured, the models exist and stay available.

Frequently asked questions

Our machine is down right now. How fast can you move?

Quoting is usually same-day. Say in the enquiry that a machine is down and priority scheduling can often be arranged, including next-day and same-day collection in Geelong. Modelling is normally the longer half, so a simple part moves considerably faster than a complex one.

Can you make a part before it fails?

Yes, and it is the best use of this service. Measuring and modelling only has to happen once. Doing it while the machine is running turns the eventual failure into a print rather than a project, and a spare on the shelf costs very little.

Do you keep our models?

Yes, kept and versioned, so a reorder is a print rather than a new job. Your files are never used for anyone else, and where we modelled the part the model is yours to take.

Will a printed part last as long as the original?

Usually not, if the original was metal or an engineering polymer. It will often last long enough to matter, and it can be reprinted cheaply on short notice — which for a part you cannot buy at all is a better position than the one you are in now. Where a printed part is the wrong answer for the duty, you will be told.

Can you work from the part while it stays in the machine?

If it cannot be removed, photograph it from several angles with a rule laid against it and note the dimensions that control fit. It is harder and less certain than having the part, and you will be told honestly how confident the result is.
